So who exactly is the Max Payne trailer aimed at?
I’ve been thinking. After watching the Max Payne trailer God knows how many times, I’ve come to the startling conclusion that perhaps the trailer is deliberately aimed at gamers.
Normally, a trailer would give details away about the plot of a film, introduce the main characters, and generally prepare someone who doesn’t know anything about the film/story and get them interested in it.
But the MP trailer offers none of that. It doesn’t introduce Max’s story - barely mentioning the loss of his wife and child and doesn’t introduce Mona or Jack Lupino. I didn’t even notice this at first because my mind filled in the blanks from what I already knew.
Conversely, the trailer doesn’t show the character of Jason Colvin, played by Chris O’Donnell, who doesn’t appear in either game. It shows Jim Bravura (Ludacris) but makes his involvement seem strange and almost non-Jim Bravura like.
So, is the trailer aimed to capture the attention of gamers, and fans of Max Payne? It certainly seems so. The obvious showing of locations from the game and that shot of Mona, as well as gratuitous showings of NY similar to the game, certainly backs that theory up. To someone who isn’t familiar with the games, the trailer may seem confusing and lacks explanation.
Just something I thought about today and figured I’d scribble down.
