Lost the Game
I haven’t played Lost: The Video Game or as it’s called in the US, Lost: Via Domus. I don’t intend to until the price goes down (Actually, it’s £10 on play.com for PC, but I have no idea how it will perform on my PC as they decided to not release a demo for any platform. gg ubisoft).
I’ve not heard good things about it, which is why I don’t plan on playing it for a while. I don’t know the story yet, but will probably find it out when I play.
But I understand the premise of the game. I’m a huge Lost fan. I also understand it from reviews that the premise itself is not particularly good - you play a ‘background’ extra from the show and you’re generally following the show’s story while getting flashbacks but somehow staying in the background throughout. However, the game is considered non-canon, which is ironic considering it was sold as being full of answers for the show.
The huge mistake was made in the choice of the character. Jack Shephard, in the show, was originally destined to die in first episode (’Pilot’). However, the writers changed this and he has become the de facto main character of the show. What would happen if you removed that? What if he DID die in the crash or in the first episode? How would that change things?
The game style would totally shift towards an RPG style setting. Choices would be made, and character development would be at the forefront. Would you ‘become’ Jack and take over his role, or let another survivor of the crash become the leader, such as Locke or another well-known character who never got the chance to be leader? The choices you make towards other people would affect all this as well as relationships, in a similar style to Mass Effect.
And wow, what a game it would be. It’d be awesome. It would still have the action and drama of the show, but it would be it’s own game. It wouldn’t be a straight tie-in. With the free roam of the island and the freedom to go anywhere, choose any route for the survivors to take, it would be amazing. It wouldn’t have to claim to be canon but would simply be a whole ‘nother experience for the Lost player, and a chance to experience what it is like to be leader of a rag tag band of survivors.
You wouldn’t be just a sideline character, hiding in the background and breaking canon when you pop up. You’d be at the forefront, creating your own character, your own history, your own flashbacks, and your own choices.
It would be amazing. Of course, providing they didn’t keep the crap character models they have in the game right now, and not to mention proper voices. Not american-indian Locke. Definately not.
